Types of Lenses

Single Vision

Single vision lenses have the same power over the whole lens. They are most commonly used as reading glasses or distance glasses – they are also the most popular lens type.

Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal lenses contain two or more vision-correcting prescriptions and are a great and convenient way of having 2 or more different lenses in one.

Bifocals are the most common type of multifocal lenses and as the name suggests they are two lenses in one – the top section is for distance viewing while the lower section is for reading. These two areas are separated by a distinct line on the lens which can be irritating for some users although most people quickly adjust to them.

Trifocals are like bifocals but with a third section used for middle or intermediate distance vision – for viewing things at arms length – computer or desk area.

Progressive lenses have a continuous change in magnification from the distance portion of the lens, through intermediate to near. There are no lines between the different parts of the lens. Most people adapt well to them but like bifocals some people find some difficulty. With progressive lenses, you look through the top portion of the lens for distance viewing and look through the centre of the lens to view your computer or desk area. Looking downward at the lower portion of the lens is for reading or close up work
